Overhaul Your Outgoings and Save

Brought to you by: Breez DeGuzman

Bills can take a big bite out of our finances. But many of them are unavoidable. We need a place to live and electricity. If we drive, we’re required by law to have auto insurance. And certain things like phone and Internet service make our lives much easier.

It’s not really feasible to eliminate all bills. But we can save money on them if we are willing to put forth the effort. Evaluating how much we’re paying for recurring expenses and searching for better deals can reduce our monthly spending more than we might realize.

Save on Energy

When it comes to energy, prices vary somewhat among providers. Unfortunately, we can’t currently take our business to another electric company unless we move to a different service area. But we can switch providers of some other types of energy.

One of the biggest bills that some of us incur during the winter is the heating bill. If you heat with kerosene, oil or propane, switching providers is an option worth considering. The amount you’re paying per gallon should be listed on your bill. Calling around to other providers in your area could alert you to lower prices. Just remember that energy prices fluctuate, so it’s smart to compare each time you plan to fill up.

Save on Insurance

Insurance is one of those things that we all need in some shape or form. Homeowners need homeowner’s insurance, drivers need auto insurance, and everyone should have life insurance. But frequently, we stay with the same providers unless we have a compelling reason to switch.

Comparing insurance rates from time to time can save us a significant amount of money. And it’s easier to do than ever thanks to comparison websites. You can go online, enter your information once, and get quotes from multiple companies. Just remember to take a good look at the policy and research the company before you switch, because when it comes to insurance, price isn’t everything.

Save on Your Phone Bill

Local phone service is usually relatively inexpensive, and in most areas there aren’t many providers to choose from. But when it comes to long-distance service, it definitely pays to shop around. There are lots of companies out there and even more plans. Finding a reputable provider with a plan that suits your needs can save you a great deal of money if you make a lot of long-distance calls.

Cellular phone service is another area in which many of us can save money. It’s smart to check your provider’s rate plans periodically to see if they’ve introduced anything new that would be less expensive for you. It’s also a good idea to check rates with other providers from time to time. Just make sure that you read the fine print, because in many cases you’ll have to sign a contract.

These are just a few areas in which you could potentially save money each month. Looking through all of your bills every now and then and seeing where there’s room for improvement can be beneficial to your budget.
